Blog Writing

Blog up your website.  Creative blog writing made easy.

Writing and maintaining a simple business blog will increase views and traffic to your site and help to increase your Google rankings.  Blogging might sound like a daunting task but it is an imperative aspect of your overall digital marketing strategy, especially if you approach composing an email or a birthday card message with dread and foreboding.  However, blog writing is not as difficult as you may think.  Follow this simple guide, with easy steps and clever tricks, to successful blog writing and soon you will be posting regularly and confidently.

Subjects Matter:

The first step is deciding what you want to write about. Identify your subject matter and your focus.  Consider your customer base, the people who already use your website and then think about those you wish to attract. Be original in your ideas. The subject should be relevant to, and reflect the ethos of your business. Writing about what you know will make things simpler from the start, but you can also have some fun and be as creative as you like.  Consult with Google Ads Keyword Planner to find the phrases and keywords which people are using when searching for your services and these will provide suitable blog titles.

Setting the Tone:

Your website and your business will dictate the tone of your blog. Financial institutions, funeral directors and auctioneers might gravitate towards a more serious business-speak, while an online toyshop or coffee bar might adopt a more chatty style.  Blogs are meant to be friendly and informal, so even with a business blog you can speak to your readers as you would to real life clients. Don’t get too worried about being ‘right’ or ‘cool’, be yourself and you will end up being both.

Filling the Empty Page:

Never stare at an empty page for longer than a minute!  The blankness is one of the most off-putting sights to any blogger.  Decide on your title before you start and type that immediately.  The internet is full of suggestions and ideas for titles. Here's some clever resources for coming up with your Blog Titles - Attention Grabbing Blog Titles or Amusing Blog Titles you decide.   An easy way to approach content on your first few blogs is to list things numerically. We are all familiar with this form of blogging. For example:  7 reasons why sugar is good/bad for you; 15 ways to make your own disposable barbeque; 20 reasons why black is better than white; (are you seeing a pattern here?). Be creative and original in your thinking.  For example, flower shops may write about blooms, brides and Mother’s Day. All are perfectly acceptable content material,   but the clever florist will also include blogs about ‘Wedding Day Disasters’ or ‘Flower remedies for colds and flu symptoms’ and  the ever popular ’13 ways to make your flowers last longer.’ Include links to interesting articles that are relevant to your blogs. In short, make your content valuable, solve your customers’ problems and impart your wisdom.

Word Count and Frequency:

How much and how often you post depends entirely on you and your available resources, however, consistency is the key. Fortnightly, or weekly postings are fine, and anywhere between 400 to 600 words is an optimum length. Don’t forget to check your spelling and grammar, and allow comments to be posted so that you may enjoy feedback. Making Links:  Once you are up and running, remember that Links are the lifeblood of the internet, so make it easy for your readers to share your blog. The easiest way to do this is by using Social Media, (Facebook or Twitter) share icons. These make it easy for people to share your post and as a result, drive traffic and potential sales to your website. Happy Blogging.
